Transition processes towards more ecologically-oriented farming in France: technological progress and social and environmental issues in the context of sustainable development

Abstract

The research aims to study the transition processes towards more ecologically-oriented farming in France, implemented in the country since the late 1950s. The strategies of learning and exchange of new technology, knowledge and experience, carried by the construction of dense and diverse networks shaped by the collective of different actors will be studied, and the effects of these actions on environmental issues in the territories. The aim is also to learn conceptual discussions and theoretical-methodological conducted in the scientific field of Geography on models more environmentally sensitive agricultural, sustainable development and territorial agri-food systems, fundamental concepts in order to interpret and analyze the dynamics of relationships and socio-spatial transformations underway in the territories. To accomplish those objectives, we will participate in seminars organized by the research groups, we will follow courses that address topics associated with the study developed, we will do bibliographic records on such themes, data and information secondary sources will be collected and we will conduct interviews with "key persons" related to agricultural research institutions, technical assistance, social organizations and farmers. Our efforts strive to deepen the knowledge on the technological progress and socio-environmental issues facing the transition to more environmentally sensitive agricultural in the country. With the completion of this study it will be possible to produce and share knowledge that will turn the theoretical-methodological basic aid for development analysis and policy change proposals for a more ecological agriculture in Brazil (without disrepute specificities our socio-spatial and socio-historical reality), especially regarding the Política Nacional de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural (PNATER), analyzed in the research project funded by FAPESP (Processo 2013/25725-8).
