Computational study of aeroacoustic effect of a seal located on slat cove and analysis by POD technique

Abstract

With the development of environmental protection policy, noise impact caused by aircrafts during take-off and especially during landing (when engines are not in full power) has forced aeroanautical industry to focus on study of techniques and devices that reduce noise generated by highlift surfaces. Slat device present in most modern aircraft, appears as a significant noise generator since it is present in almost all wingspan. This project aims to continue the research study done in just over two years through research financed by FAPESP of simulations using the commercial PowerFLOW code. This project aimed to study aeroacoustic contribution of a seal located on slat cove that has the function of the mechanical isolation. During this research, cases were simulated varying seal's position, height and a range of angles of attack, resulting in a dense database that the extracted the information and conclusions that were relevant considering the project level and deadlines. The results were well seen by reviewer that encouraged to proceed this research in a Master project. Thus, this project aims to continue the post-processing of the cases simulated and continue the investigation of phenomena related to the presence of this kind of excrescence over the slat surface. For that we intend to use advanced processing techniques, known as POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition). POD analysis represents a method to study structures present inside flow since it allows to investigate the most significant mechanisms present in the flow phenomena. (AU)
