Influence of collagen membrane in maxillary sinus grafted with bovine bone material: histomorphometrical study in rabbits

Abstract

The elevation of the maxillary sinus floor was introduced by Tatum (1977, 1986) and developed by Boyne & James (1980). This surgical procedure aims to increase the amount of bone in the maxilla posterior regions of the maxilla and it has been widely used in clinical implant therapy. Objectives: To define if the use of collagen membranes below the Schneiderian mucosa may affect the repair in augmented maxillary sinuses of rabbits. Methods: In a split-mouth model, 18 rabbits will be used for sinus floor elevation in three experimental times (2, 4 and 8 weeks). All sinuses will be bilaretally elevated and filled with bovine bone mineral. In the first group (test side), a collagen will be used below the Schneiderian membrane mucosa while in the control side it will not be used. Histological sections will allow histomorphometric analysis of newly formed bone, connective tissue and biomaterials for comparative statistical analysis ANOVA between specific periods.
