Genomic and phenotypic diversification in the genus Cycloramphus at multiple taxonomic scales (Anura, Cycloramphidae)

Abstract

In our project in Brazil (FAPESP #2014/24972-4) we investigate the evolutionary diversification of frogs in the genus Cycloramphus (Cycloramphidae) at three different scales that address distinct processes: variation among species, among populations, and among individuals. Here we propose to make important advances in two of those aspects at Cornell University, and in the process make use of new laboratory and analytical tools that will enhance our power to address questions about diversification in this group. Microevolutionary processes are based on changes through time, usually with the emergence of new entities via interruption of gene flow among populations. The Atlantic Forest is an exuberant biome and an excellent Neotropical formation for studies of evolutionary processes. The genus Cycloramphus includes frog species endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest that exhibit specialized life history and reproductive habits, with particular environmental requirements, and therefore are excellent organisms for evolutionary studies of diversification and speciation. We propose to investigate: (I) the molecular phylogeny of Cycloramphus, aiming to understand the evolutionary history of the genus in association with the species' biology and ecology; and (II) the population genetics of two species that are partially sympatric (C. boraceiensis and C. dubius), exploring gene flow. At Cornell, we intend to complete the phylogenetic comparative analyses, and, simultaneously, apply next generation sequencing laboratory methods (double-digest RADseq) and phylogeographic analyses for the study of population genetics.
