Separation and preconcentration in flow analysis stand out due to better precision, low consumption of samples and reagents, as well as diminution of risks to the analyst, of analyte losses and contaminations. Highly reproductive sample processing conditions and timing make feasible the analytical exploitation of non-quantitative processes. On the other hand, the low efficiency (e.g. gas diffusion processes) hinders sensitivity and limits the range of applications. In this sense, this project focuses on the evaluation of potentialities and analytical performance of a new approach for gas-liquid separations in flow analysis. The approach is based on membraneless separations, which will be carried out inside a syringe (lab-in-syringe approach), followed by the quantitative transfer of the gas phase collected in the headspace to the acceptor/derivatizing solution, aiming at improving the process efficiency. The innovation will be exploited in relevant applications for environmental analysis: fractioning of dissolved carbon and sequential determination of cyanide and sulfide, also exploiting a novel approach for discrimination of the species, which mutually interfere in the determination of each other. Thus, the viability of the proposed approach will be demonstrated, with an improvement of the analytical performance, mainly in relation to sensitivity, sample throughput and waste generation. (AU)
