Abstract

This research has as its the main objective to unravel the mechanisms of globalized agriculture, making a parallel between the Brazilian agriculture and the agriculture in the European Union, particularly in what it is concerned to the use of pesticides. In this sense, considering that Brazil is, today, a major exporter of agricultural commodities and biofuels and that agriculture is carried out by intensive use of pesticides, we seek to understand how EU countries, particularly the United Kingdom, which restricts the use of a number of pesticides permitted in Brazil and that constitute one of the most important destinations of these Brazilian products, receive these products. It is intended also to investigate the use of agrochemicals in European agriculture, and particularly in the UK. We aim to evaluate the role of different EU nations, and specifically of the United Kingdom, in the establishment of Annex I of the Directive 91/414 / EEC (List of Active Ingredients with permitted use in the European Union). Finally, as a result of this research, we seek to map the pesticide use in the European Union and the distribution of commodities and other Brazilian agricultural products, including biofuels, in the countries.
