Abstract

We will assess the current distribution of habitats, vegetation, and surface structure (geomorphology) of the Amazon basin, and their relationships to the underlying evolutionary and geologic processes from present to deep time. The research will employ integrated data sets from Earth-orbiting satellites and airborne sensors, to generate complex and innovative ecological datasets. These data with be then combined with local and regional ecological and phylogeographic datasets to better understand the processes that gave rise to modern Amazonian biodiversity, and predict future patterns. Data will also be combined to information on past environments, to explore patterns of taxonomic and phylogenetic endemism and species and lineage turnover. The results of these analyses will have a major impact on interpretations of the evolutionary history of the Amazon Basin. (AU)
