A numismatic study: survey and analysis of military iconographic schemes of coins from Roman Palestine between centuries I and iii CE

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the military iconographic schemes and recurring patterns of coins production in several cities in three regions (coast, inland and Transjordan) from Roman Palestine during centuries I and III CE. Firstly, our proposal is to accomplish, through research of available catalogs, bibliographic surveys of coins and images about our theme. Secondly, we intend to reach an understanding of the origin of Roman army and how it was structured, as well as the legions in this province; establishing through the study of the place and the period in which these coins were produced the location of troops in the territory and, from this point, studying the multi-directional cultural influences between the Roman military sector and the local population through the iconographic analysis of the identified coins; and, finally, systematizing the results to feed the Barolo database from Laboratório de Arqueologia Romana Provincial (LARP - MAE - USP - n° FAPESP 2015/17836-0) - responsible for the design of the Roman Empire Interactive Map which this work is part of.
