Molecular devices for energy conversion are ascending renewable technologies that stand as promising strategies to reduce pollution and as alternative energy sources. In this project, nanocrystalline materials, such as Ir(III) complexes, nanocrystals and semiconductor oxides, will be developed for application in molecular devices aiming to a more efficient and sustainable energy conversion.Homo- and heteroleptic Ir(III) complexes will be synthesized according to molecular engineering concepts, with tuning of the emission color and quantum yield by control of excited state mixings. Particular emphasis will be given to the development of blue and red emitters with high quantum yields, looking for application in more-efficient luminescent devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs). Wet and high-vacuum processes will be employed in their fabrication searching for efficient devices. Low-cost technologies that can lead to energy savings will be considered, as well. In parallel, photovoltaic devices based on nanocrystals and semiconductor oxides will be fabricated using contact and blocking layers to enhance charge-injections hence global conversion efficiencies.
