Abstract

Background: Low back pain is one of the most common conditions associated with disability throughout the world. In addition to being a major health problem with major consequences of the socioeconomic point of view, it is also associated with high costs for the health system, work absenteeism and disability. In Brazil, about 10 million people have disability associated with back pain, and at least 70% of the population will have an episode of this condition throughout life. Most studies of prevalence of low back pain conducted in Brazil refers to specific populations or are not representative studies. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a study to measure for the first time, the prevalence of low back pain (acute, subacute and chronic) an extract of the population, using a large sample contingent. Objective: To measure the prevalence of back pain in the census of Barra Funda, center-west of the metropolitan area of São Paulo. Methods: Will be selected 300 individuals of both genders, above 18 years old in the urban area of the metropolitan region of São Paulo in the census of Barra Funda - Brazil. Will be included in the study all individuals who accept the invitation to participate by responding to questionnaires on the prevalence of low back pain. The data collection will be held in one of the 97 census tracts in São Paulo, in a continuous flow of local people through the individual application of the evaluation questionnaires of low back pain in a simple and objective way. Expected Results: To identify the prevalence of low back pain (acute, subacute and chronic) in the census of Barra Funda, Central West area of Sao Paulo.
