The observed upconversion (UC) phenomena in rare earths doped nanoparticles (NPs) has been recently a subject of intensive studies due to the potential applications in solar energy, lasers, biosensors and bioimagens. However, the optical efficiency of the UC is not enough to guarantee a good performance for most of the technological applications. This have motivated theoretical and experimental studies involving another optical phenomena, named Plasmons Resonance (PR), which allows to increase in at least two order of magnitude the UC efficiency. In this proposal, we shall use metallic Au and Ag NPs in order to increase the intensity of the electric field at the surface of the NPs that in turn would significantly increase the efficiency of the UC phenomenon.
