Abstract

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV), Closteroviridae family, Crinivirus genus, and Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV), Geminiviridae family, Begomovirus genus, are two viruses that currently compromise the production of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) in Brazil. The ToCV and ToSRV have the same vector, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype B, a polyphagous insect and widely disseminated throughout the country. For this fact, mixed infections of these viruses in tomato crops are becoming increasingly frequent. However, little is known about the synergistic or antagonistic effects of virus in doubly infected plants, the changes caused in major epidemiological parameters, such as, for example, the latency period, the time when the plant becomes a source of virus for vector, the effects on the intensity of symptoms and damage caused in the production. This paper aims to determine the latency period of ToSRV and ToCV in single and mixed infections in tomato, depending on the age of the plant at the time of inoculation and also check the time the tomato infected ToSRV and ToCV, separately or in together becomes conducive to acquisition the virus by B. tabaci biotype B. The results of this project will provide important information from the epidemiological point of view and may be used in the preparation of management measures aimed at minimizing the impacts caused by these fitoviroses in tomato production (AU)
