Abstract

The antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the longevity and quality of life of people with HIV. However, it is associated with various complications, for example, osteopenia and osteoporosis, due to deficiency in vitamin D hence causing an increase in parathyroid hormone levels. It is known that women in postmenopause have a sharp increase in bone loss due to the decrease in the production of estrogen. Thus, this observational and cross-sectional study aims to estimate the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in HIV-infected women, postmenopausal, and its relationship with vitamin D deficiency, hyperparathyroidism and chronic use of ART. The sample will be divided into four groups (G): G1: 30 postmenopausal women, HIV-infected, including before the introduction of HAART. G2: 30 postmenopausal women, HIV-infected, regular use of ART for at least six months. G3 (control): 30 premenopausal women, HIV-infected. G4 (control): 30 postmenopausal women not infected with HIV. The descriptive statistical analysis will be performed, including frequency distribution for categorical data and calculation of medians and interquartile ranges for continuous variables. The prevalence of bone mineral density is calculated in relative frequency function. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals are calculated in bivariate analyzes. Statistical significance considered will be 5%.
