Based on Dutch Functional Grammar tradition, Hengeveld (2004) classifies modalities based on two criterions: the target of evaluation (part of the utterance which is evaluated) and the semantic domain of evaluation (in which perspective the evaluation is done). With regard to the second parameter, modalities may be subdivided in facultative, epistemic, deontic and volitive. The aim of this work is verify, based on Hengeveld (2004) proposal and on the process of grammaticalization, the modal values that the Iberian Spanish construction "tener que" may express. Considering grammaticalization as a gradual process of linguistic change which has unidirectionality of trajectory [lexicon] > [grammar] as a conductor principle and which involves the conceptual transfer of an expression with more concrete meaning (source items) toward the expression with more abstract meaning (target items) (HEINE et al., 1991), this work has as main objective verify the process of abstratization of the periphrastic construction "tener que" which, according initial hypothesis, originally expresses deontic values and, subsequently, expresses epistemic values. In order to verify the modal meanings expressed by this construction, it is necessary a research under diachronic perspective to prove the periphrasis "cline" of grammaticality (inherent/deontic > epistemic) already noticed under synchronic perspective.
