Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, schistosomiasis affects more than 207 million people worldwide. In Brazil, the endemic area are 19 states with approximately 42 million people at risk of infection. Of this total, about 7 million people are currently infected, making this disease one of the most serious health problems in developing countries. The pathology is triggered by schistosomiasis due to excessive response of CD4 + T cells of type 1 and 2, which causes an intense inflammatory response that triggers the formation of granulomas, which are responsible for the most relevant clinical manifestations. In addition, numerous reports show increased Schistosoma mansoni strain resistant Praziquantel. Considering the parasitological aspects and pathogenesis, the development of new drugs against schistosomiasis is an important alternative for treatment with praziquantel. Preliminary assays in vitro showed promising activity schistosomicidal for Copaifera duckei (Cdo) oleoresin and et-polialtico acid (PA). So, as part of the project granted by FAPESP (2011 / 13630-7), this study aims to evaluate the schistosomicidal activity Cdo and PA in vivo using various schemes treatment. Furthermore, the pathology of the disease will be assessed by histological analysis and cytokine profile to assess modulation of the immune response during the treatment.
