This project will aim to evaluate the metabolites produced by plants under water deficit conditions, to identify drought tolerant bean families through recurrent selection and estimate the genetic progress after two selection cycles. Thus, ten previously selected genotypes to drought tolerance and to agronomic traits of interest (Gen TS 3-1, Gen TS 3-2, Gen TS 3-3, Gen Gen TS 4-7, FAP-F3-2 IAC H96A31-P2-1-1-1-1, IAC Imperador and IAPAR 81, Carioca Precoce and IAC Carioca Eté) will be evaluated for the traits: metabolites production, stomatal conductance, leaf temperature and agronomic traits. The experimental design will be a split plot randomized block with three replicates. The plots will consist of two water treatments: Irrigated and water deficit. The water deficit will be applied at R5 stage (pre-flowering) and the subplots will be consisted by the 10 genotypes and the testers SEA- 5 and IAC Apuã. The base population for the outset of recurrent selection will be developed through the intercrossing among the ten genotypes above mentioned, and the F2 population will be evaluated at controlling condition for the traits: stomatal conductance, leaf temperature and agronomic traits in irrigated and drought condition. The experimental design will be a split-plot with randomized block with three replications. After selecting the 10 best populations, the C-I cycle of recurrent selection will start through intercrossing between them. Subsequently, the F2 generation obtained in this cycle will be cultivated and selected in field conditions regarding the drought tolerance, yield growth habit and diseases resistance traits observed in the field. The F2:3 selected families will be collected and evaluated in greenhouse conditions under irrigation and water deficit, as described in the C-0 cycle. After two selection cycles, C-0 and C-I, the genetic progress will be estimated and the superior progenies with drought tolerance will be identified. (AU)
