Associated to the scholarship:13/18623-4 - Taxonomic revision of Pimelodella (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae): an integrative proposal to delimit species using a multidisciplinary strategy, BP.DR

Pimelodella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1888, is the richest Heptapteridae genus, composed of 77 valid species distributed thoroughly Neotropical drainages, in trans- and cis-Andean rivers, from Panamá to Argentina. Due to its conservative morphology, high species-richness, wide distribution and absence of extensive phylogenetic studies, Pimelodella contributes to a great number of taxonomic and systematic problems of Neotropical fishes. In order to help solve such problems, this project aims to study the comparative anatomy of its species, making a revisionary taxonomic work for Pimelodella species. To accomplish this, we will make a thorough prospection of the type-material of Pimelodella among American institutions, which encompass 60% of all the type-specimens for this genus. The direct examination of type-material will provide the basis of the taxonomic revision and the establishment of the key anatomical differences among the species of Pimelodella. The information thus obtained will be compared to other data collected within the PhD project to which this project is subsidiary, in order to make a complete diagnosis of the valid species of Pimelodella.
