Abstract

The purpose of this study will be to evaluate the expression of antimicrobial peptides in the periodontal tissues of rats with ligature-induced periodontitis treated or not with the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subspecies lactis HN019. 32 rats will be assigned to four experimental groups: C (control), DP (periodontal disease), PROB (probiotic) and DP/PROB (periodontal disease with probiotic). Periodontal disease will be induced with the placement of ligatures around first molars of each animal. The ligatures will be left in the same position during 14 days. Animals of groups PROB and DP/PROB will be orally administered with Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 for 28 days. In group DP/PROB the probiotic therapy will begin 14 days before periodontal disease induction. All animals will be euthanized 28 days after the start of the study. The hemimandibles will bed excised and collected. ²-defensin (BD)-1, BD-2 and BD-3 immunohistochemical staining will be performed. The data obtained will be subjected to statistical analysis (p < 0.05).
