Reservoirs are artificial environments built with the primary purpose of power generation and public supply. They are complex and dynamic systems and, as part of a hydrographic basin, detect all the effects of anthropogenic activities in the region. Eutrophication is one of the effects of these activities, due to the nutrient input arising from use and occupation of the land and from activities performed on the water body. The occurrence of potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms is one of the consequences of artificial enrichment in the aquatic system. This condition may hinder the reservoir water for its multiple uses. Therefore, further investigation regarding cyanobacteria/cyanotoxins and their interaction with environmental factors it is of fundamental importance. The aim of this project is to describe the effect of environmental variables with emphasis on nitrogen and phosphorus on the composition, abundance and toxicity of cyanobacteria group in the Lobo reservoir (Itirapina-SP). The innovation of this project is to study this dynamic in an environment in intermediate stage of eutrophication through the spatio-temporal assessment of biotic and abiotic variables associated with molecular and toxin analysis of the cyanobacteria group. The information generated will deepen understanding of the eutrophication effects on water quality and it will allow propose strategies for proper management of the Lobo Reservoir in order to support its multiple uses.
