Abstract

We intend to analyze the presence of the aesthetic ideas of Lukács and Adorno in the essay "A Master on the Periphery of Capitalism: Machado de Assis". In order to do so, we will investigate Schwarz's essay using the same interpretive parameter that he employed to perform the criticism of Machado de Assis' literature, that is, by examining its formal principles. Thus, we will explain that the aesthetic criticism of Roberto Schwarz holds a double formal aspect: 1) it is grounded on the conception - borrowed from Lukács and Adorno - that the novel "The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas" is a stylization of historical references; 2) it only fulfils its purposes by means of the essayistic form, that Schwarz also inherited from the methodological perspectives of Adorno and Lukács.
