Abstract

This project proposes a ten-month research internship (April/2016 to December/2016) in the Musical Composition PhD Program of Arts Research Graduate School - Faculty of Arts of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, under the supervision of the professor and composer Prof. Dr. Thomas Reiner. This internship aims to complement the PhD research project currently developed at the Postgraduate Program in Music at Universidade de São Paulo - USP, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Silvio Ferraz Mello Filho and with a scholarship from FAPESP .The PhD research currently developed at USP consists in a study about the notion of commentary as a poetic and compositional problem, taking Luciano Berio's thinking as our main reference. In Berio's work, the practice of transcription - understood as a privileged vehicle of transmitting musical ideas throughout western history - renews itself as a compositional possibility of holding a critical position regarding musical works even within the considerable heterogeneous context of 20th and 21st centuries.Given the extent of the notion of compositional commentary in the general context of contemporary musical creation, this internship proposal involves a practice along with Prof. Dr. Thomas Reiner in three main parallel and complementary ways: A) Theoretical and Conceptual Research; B) Musical Analysis; C) Compositional Practice.
