Abstract The aim of this project is to investigate the way in which Paul Ricoeur and Karl-Otto Apel build their solutions to the problem of discourse - and consequently language - objectivity. The two of them were strongly influenced by Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics, but went down different roads from this common starting point. Ricoeur, on the one hand, has dwelled in the French phenomenological tradition - the reception of the writings of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. Apel, on the other hand, combined the aforementioned hermeneutics of Charles Sanders Peirce and Ludwig Wittgenstein's analytic philosophy of language to compose his own "transcendental pragmatics". Both philosophers point towards the same conceptual solution, each of them according to their own strategy: intersubjectivity - even though they fill the concept with different semantic contents. What I seek to identify are the convergences and divergences between the approaches of these two contemporary thinkers. I will also pose the question whether they can be pointed out as crossroads of the so-called 'analytic' and 'continental' philosophical traditions. (AU) | |
