Abstract

Leopold Antonovich Sulerzhitsky (1872-1916) was one of the greatest theatrical masters of the early twentieth century. Pedagogue, artist, writer and stage director deeply connected to the artistic and cultural life of his time, he was a key figure in the formation of various concepts of Konstantin Stanislavsky's system. Besides participating intensively in the activities of the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT), Leopold Sulerzhitsky became responsible for the spread of tolstoyan trend elements among the young actors of the Studio. His commitment to ethics and aesthetics, as well as the pursuit of deep human relations within the art, renewed the theater environment and brought to light an important paradigm shift, which is essential nowadays in the role of a director: the inseparability between pedagogy and creation. Although Leopold Sulerzhitsky was a central figure in the development of the theater in the last century, there is no research devoted entirely to him in Portuguese. In this sense, the actual research "Theatre Master, life master - Leopold Sulerzhitsky and his artistic and pedagogical experience" is an absolute forerunner in the field of Russian studies in Brazil, since its goal is to study the artistic, literary and pedagogical heritage of Leopold Sulerzhitsky and to translate his letters, diary entries and essays directly from Russian. Because of its originality and lack of materials about Leopold Sulerzhitsky in Portuguese, we believe in the necessity of a three-month internship abroad in the State Institute for Art Studies (Moscow/Russia).
