Abstract

The occurrence of thermogenic gas seeps in continental regions is a well-known and important marker for hydrocarbon exploration. Operational methods for direct detection of these gases, however, are rare and mostly based on soil gasometry. Brazilian onshore sedimentary basins have a great potential for the discovery of new gas reserves, mainly in the southeastern and northeastern regions of the country where, recently, new reservoirs were discovered and some are already in production (eg, Gavião fileds, Parnaíba Basin). Methane (CH4) is one of the primary components of thermogenic gas. The identification of plumes of this hydrocarbon at surface can reveal new potential plays, leading oil exploration campaigns. Methane presents diagnostic spectral absorption bands in the longwave infrared (or thermal infrared), centered between 7,4-8 micrometers. Sensors able to detect the thermal infrared radiation emitted from targets along these wavelengths therefore can be used for the remote sensing of gaseous plumes. In this context, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of thermal hyperspectral remote sensing data to detect and to semiquantify thermogenic gas plumes in continental regions. In order to achieve this aim, emissivity data yielded from a controlled seepage simulation of natural gas (methane) were sensed with an airborne thermal hyperspectral imager, namely Spatially Enhanced Broadband Array System Spectrograph (SEBASS), which operates between 7.6-13.5 µm. Among the results, we expect to develop a methodology capable of assisting the discovery of new natural gas reserves in the Brazilian continental basins.
