Abstract

Thyroid nodules are extremely frequent, affecting approximately 50% of population. While common, the majority of detectable nodules are benign. While common, the majority of detectable lumps are benign. However, 25% of these do not have a conclusive diagnosis by cytology, hindering the clinical approach to these patients. The transforming growth factor-² (TGF-²) is a cytokine involved in proliferation, migration, inflammation, tissue repair, immune response, cellular differentiation and apoptosis in different cell types. The TGF-² primary function is to mediate intracellular activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and deficiency leads to an extensive inflammation. Our group has shown that inflammation may be related to the molecular profile and the CDT prognosis. The objective of this study is to test a possible correlation between polymorphisms in TGFB1 genes and their receptors (TGFBR1 and TGFBR2) and its gene and protein expression, and susceptibility to differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and/or the characteristics clinical disease and its progression. Will be analyzed 100 patients with DTC and 100 patients with benign nodules. The data obtained will be related to clinical data and patient outcomes. This will be associated with data obtained in previous studies on immunological aspects of the response to tumor, including cytokines and their receptors. (AU)
