Abstract

Although there are few reports regarding Enterobacteriaceae and Non-Fermenting Gram-Negative (BGN-NF) bacilli causing meningitis, these bacteria can both cause community and/or hospitalar meningitis. The treatment of the patients is compromised since it is increasingly common strains which have important resistance mechanisms, for example, production of Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Enzymes (ESBL), AmpC and carbapenemases. It is known that several plasmidial resistance genes are widespread among the Enterobacteriaceae family and also among non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli. It is of great importance the detection and identification of these plasmidial genes for therapeutics, in order to increase the life expectancy and/or the improvement of the patient's life quality affected by the pathogen. The aim of this work is the phenotypic and molecular study of the production of ESBL, AmpC and carbapenemase in Enterobacteriaceae and BGN-NF isolated from patients with suspected meningitis in the region of Ribeirão Preto, which were previously investigated at the Instituto Adolfo Lutz of Ribeirão Preto, after 2006. It will be necessary to establish the sensitivity to beta-lactam antibiotics, phenotypic detection of ESBL production by the isolates, identification of ESBL, carbapenemase and AmpC encoding genes involved in the phenotype of resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics, evaluate probable concomitant presence of ESBL and other beta-lactamases and investigate the incompatibility group of plasmids present in these bacteria as well as the size and number of these plasmids.
