Abstract

Currently, issues related to the environment such as sustainable development and conservation of natural resources are being discussed and dealt often in big events, scientific or not, in various areas of knowledge. In sync, scholars have been developing and applying new techniques whose goals involve reducing the production of toxic substances in industrial and commercial contexts to protect from the environment and the human health. In this context, the preparation and analysis of herbal medicines, as well as their credibility, to the treatment and curing the diseases gain considerable extent, whereas in the chromatographic analysis to determination of principle active in the plant extracts use solvents considered non-green, or causing harmful effects. To the performing these investigations, often employs the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). However, this technique uses, in majority of analytical studies, modifiers and highly toxic solvents such as acetonitrile and the trifluoroacetic acid that generate waste that enhance environmental impacts. As order to contribute to the preservation or recovery of the environment, this project aims to develop friendly environmentally methods for analytical determination of active ingredients in Cynara scolymus L. (artichoke) extracts by HPLC. This medicinal specie is present in the National List of Medicinal Plants of interest of the Brazilian Government (Renisus). (AU)
