Abstract

The theoretical description of the experimental data on hadron-hadron soft scattering (elastic and dissociative processes) constitutes a long-standing problem for QCD. As a large distance phenomena (small momentum transfer) they are not directly accessed by perturbative techniques and the crucial point concerns the absence of a nonperturbative framework able to provide from the first principles of QCD a global description of the physical quantities related to soft scattering states. Recent and future experimental data on these processes (Run 1 and Run 2 at the CERN LHC) are expected to provide important information for the necessary development of QCD in the soft sector. In this context, we are presently developing the doctoral program of title "Studies on direct and inverse problems in elastic hadron scattering", where we look for new empirical information and connections with nonperturbative QCD, in a feedback process. As part of that research, this internship project focus on the theoretical sector of the proposal (nonperturbative QCD), through the internship of Paulo Silva with the Theoretical Physics Group of Pisa University (Italy), under the supervision of Prof. Enrico Meggiolaro. Besides detailed studies on nonperturbative QCD, the main goals of the project are: (1) the exchange of information and experiences provided by empirical (model-independent) analyses (Campinas group) and recent theoretical results based on the functional integral approach and lattice QCD (Pisa group); (2) jointly development of new analyses of the experimental data from Run 2, with focus on the theoretical description of hadronic cross sections and properties of the elastic proton-proton scattering at the highest and asymptotic energies.
