Fungi belonging to the genus Colletotrichum, which cause anthracnosis in plants, constitute one of the main phytopatogens around the world and affect cultures of sweet pepper, guarana, strawberry, passion fruit, mango, onions, garlic, among others. Despite the damages on different vegetables species of high economic and nutricional value, there is no completely efficient plant treatment to avoid the infection and damages promoted by Colletotrichum spp. Fungi belonging to this genus produce secondary metabolites, which may constitute part of the virulence arsenal associated to the fungi pathogenicity. However, very few metabolites produced by phytotoxic Colletotrichum on different plant species have been isolated and identified. In different investigations, compounds have been detected in media produced from phytotoxic Colletotrichum spp., but could not be isolated and identified because are produced only in trace amounts. The present project aims to use a metabolomics approach to investigate the ensemble of Colletotrichum spp. metabolites when the fungi express phytopathogenicity and not, in order to verify if the production of particular secondary metabolites is associated or not to the virulence of phytopathogenic Colletotrichum spp.
