Abstract

The Infection with Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVDV) in pigs may show clinical signs similar to what with Classical Swine Fever (CSF). In ruminants, it is known that this virus can cause reproductive problems in pigs, however there are still different studies to determine the purposes of BVDV infection during pregnancy and effects in newborns. This project aims to evaluate the effect of BVDV infection in different gestational periods of sows and its consequences in newborns. It is intended to inoculate the BVDV-2 in pregnant sows divided into five groups: one group inoculated 30 days before the beginning of pregnancy, the three groups are inoculated during pregnancy (first, second and third third) and the fifth group is not inoculated (control). Will be collected all blood sample sows, rectal and nasal swabs every 3 days from the day of inoculation of the first group until the day of calving. Proceed will be routine clinical evaluations in pregnant sows monitor possible cases of abortion. On the day of birth, will be euthanized half of live newborns to obtain blood samples and organs at necropsy. The tests used are the virus neutralization, histopathology and real time RT-PCR. Therefore, this project aims to elucidate some BVDV infection characteristics in pigs and thus give more support to differential diagnosis of PSC.
