Abstract

This project aims at obtaining a post-doctoral scholarship to the development of a research within the FAPESP thematic project called The govern of conflict in the production of the contemporary city: the case of São Paulo. This proposal integrates the empirical line "The illegal and informal markets", particularly in the axe "Illegal markets, networks and urban territorialities". The objective is to analyze, in a comparative perspective, the issue of urban criminality, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, concerning the structure of the illegal drug market networks, the processes of criminal organization into "comandos" and the dynamics of sociability in favelas and poor neighborhoods, in their relation to social control institutions and public security policies. The aim is to investigate the arrangements of practices and relations that have been set throughout the last decades between drug trafficking, police and territory in the two main Brazilian metropolises, as means to identify continuities and establish counterpoints that may clarify the contexts in focus. The research aspires to fulfill the hiatus left by the lack of comparative studies between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo regarding the issue of violence in the great cities. Through a bibliographical review, documental research (press and public archives), depth interviews and ethnographical research, the study intends to organize the accumulated knowledge on the theme and comparatively analyze the actual composition of the criminal matter and the historical processes involved in its constitution.
