Abstract

Currently, intensive fish production systems are an important source of animal protein due to the enlarged demand caused by the increase of the world population and the decrease of fish stocks. Despite this importance, the high density of fish in cages in São Paulo triggers a series of adverse effects of the production systems. Among them, the introduction of massive amounts of food used for fish feeding and the high concentration of excreta released by them favor the eutrophication of the waters, culminating in the increased growth of certain groups of cyanobacteria leading to blooms formation. This in turn can lead to production of cianotoxins (microcystins and saxitoxins, among others), which results in decreased commercial appeal and health risks for consumers of the fish products. In this sense, this proposal has the general objective to study the production and accumulation of cianotoxins in waterbodies hosting cages used for the production of tilápia. This information will provide a better understanding of the effects caused by cyanobacteria in cages used for tilápia production and also help in the development of best management practices of these systems in an attempt to reduce the growth of cyanobacteria.
