Abstract

The electroretinography is a diagnostic test that provides objective and non-invasive way information about the functioning of the retina. Although it is not a painful procedure for the proper conduct of the examination is necessary for the patient to remain still and such a situation is guaranteed with the use of anesthesia or sedation. Due to its powerful sedative effect, the ±2-adrenergic agonist drugs are widely used in this procedure. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the sedative and cardiorespiratory effects of nalbuphine-Xylazine associations and nalbuphine-dexmedetomidine in dogs that will be submitted to electroretinography. The animals will be divided into two groups: nalbuphine-Xylazine (NX group) and nalbuphine-dexmedetomidine (ND group). The animals NX group will receive nalbuphine (0.2 mg / kg), xylazine (0.3 mg / kg) intramuscularly and animals ND group will receive nalbuphine (0.2 mg / kg) associated with dexmedetomidine (5 mcg / kg) also administered intramuscularly. The results of the vital parameters will be evaluated by the Student T test, whereas the comparison between groups regarding sedation scores will be using the Mann-Whitney test, with significance level of 5% (p <0, 05). At the end of this study, it is expected to find information allowing the indication or not of this sedative protocol for the examination electroretinography in dogs.
