Abstract

A substantial number of Latin American students have completed their doctoral studies in Brazil since the 1970s. Several of them have contributed to the renewal of disciplines, creating institutions and developing research areas, both in their countries and in Brazil. Few studies, however, have explored the effects of this particular form of international circulation. This research aims to analyze the cultural, scientific and social dynamics involved in the circulation of Latin American students to Brazil. It will (i) study the data provided by CAPES on the Latin American students who have completed their doctorates in Brazil since the 1970s, in terms of their countries and universities of origin, fields of knowledge, sex, age, Brazilian graduate programs in which they were enrolled, among others; (ii) study student mobility funding programs that were active in the region during this period and that were mobilized by these students, including those sponsored by three Brazilian public agencies (CNPq, CAPES, Fapesp); (iii) examine the effects of such movements by developing two case studies: the first one concerns the Argentine students recruited by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro/Museu Nacional Graduate Program in Social Anthropology through admission exams held at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, an initiative that took place between approximately 1986 and 1996; the other one will be defined after the analysis indicated in (i).
