Trichomycteridae is one of the most specious groups with approximately 283 valid species. Its members are distributed by drainage of Central and South America, from Costa Rica to Patagonia (southern Argentina and Chile), on both sides of the Andes and coastal rivers. Members of this family are currently grouped in eight subfamilies that exhibit one of the greatest ranges of feeding modes and habitats, being one of the most impressive adaptations in this family your parasitic habit represented for members of the subfamilies Vandelliinae and Stegophilinae. The great diversity of Trichomycterids and the need of strong phylogenetic hypothesis are interesting material for the study of important evolutionary questions as: Why do some groups have such high species richness (e.g. Trichomycterinae with 203 species) whereas other clades have low diversity (e.g. Trichogeninae with two species and Tridentinae with only seven species)? How did the parasitism arise in the Trichomycterids and if this was an reversion process over the course of their evolutionary history? How the body size and different morphological adaptations have modeled the evolution of these groups? Therefore in the present study we propose to combine the genetic and intellectual resources of researchers in the USA, Brazil and Colombia to reconstruct the phylogeny of Trichomycteridae, using the most species and to study diversification process, relating the distribution and habitats of species in the light of the historical processes that have modeled the landscape evolution.
