Abstract

The triatomines are hematophagous insects of great epidemiological importance, since all species are potential insect vector of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, etiologic agent of Chagas disease. Currently, there are 150 known species, grouped into 18 genera and six tribes. The Rhodniini tribe consists of 22 species, being 19 of the Rhodnius genus and three Psammolestes genus. The species of Rhodnius genus are difficult to diagnose, since, morphologically are very similar. Thus, these insects were grouped into specific complexes. The prolixus complex is a monophyletic group consisting currently six species, out more, R. prolixus, R. domesticus, R. robustus, R. neglectus, R. nasutus and R. montenegrensis. The last species described and grouped in the complex was R. montenegrensis. Recently, it was suggested that R. montenegrensis is only a lineage of R. robustus. Therefore, this study aims to analyze cytogenetically the prolixus complex, using classical techniques (lacto-acetic Orcein and C banding) and molecular (CMA3/DAPI), with emphasis on cytotaxonomy and chromosomal evolution of vectors group.
