Abstract

Carbapenemase-producing bacteria, especially Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, have been commonly associated with hospital outbreaks, leading to high mortality due to few therapeutic options available for admitted patients. Therefore, studies investigating the prevalence and types of carbapenemases in Klebsiella pneumoniae from distinct Brazilian regions are extremely relevant. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of carbapenemases in K. pneumoniae isolated from patients hospitalized at a university hospital of Paraná State, Brazil, as well as characterizing the genetic relationship among the isolates by ERIC-PCR.
