This project aims to analyze the reception of American and Cuban abolitionists' processes in the specific socioeconomic and political context of the Empire of Brazil, from the start of the US Civil War (1861) to the enactment of the Áurea Law (1888). The first aim of the project is to verify how Brazilian contemporaries guided their "horizon of expectations" on the conduct of "servile question" from the abolitionists' "space experience" of Cuba and the United States, as well as their readings about US Reconstruction. The second objective will be to see how the reorganization of the nineteenth-century world-capitalist economy and forms of social mobilization in other regions of the world affected the proceedings in the Empire of Brazil. Thus, the research will analyze in an integrated way - not comparative - the abolitionist process that ended the "second slavery" in Brazil. It will also help the understanding of how this process developed public debate around the issue. Furthermore, the research will evaluate the insertion of the Empire into the crisis of slavery and its relationship to the world-capitalist economy in the nineteenth century. (AU)
