Abstract

Currently the need for materials that are resistant to high temperatures and mechanical stress that support is increasingly common in the aerospace environment. These applications require a material with high mechanical strength, good resistance to fatigue and creep, good corrosion resistance, and ability to operate continuously at elevated temperatures. The Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is the most widely used and its applications ranging from biomedical to the aerospace industry. This alloy has good mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, good machinability and low specific weight; characteristics that make it attractive for use in aircraft turbines. To increase the life of this alloy at elevated temperatures several studies suggest thermal, surface and ceramic coatings and thin films treatments. The study on creep materials used in turbine is of utmost importance for the life of these components is enhanced by knowing what are the parameters that limit your life in harsh environments. In this proposal for undergraduate research project is intended to prepare samples for microstructural further analysis of Ti-6Al-4V alloy obtained before and after the thin film deposition of SiC by magnetron sputtering technique, and after performing mechanical creep tests.
