The analysis of microbial metabolites in fecal water has been important in elucidating the metabolic pathways related to obesity. The identification of new biomarkers that are associated with obesity to generate grants to improve the molecular understanding of this clinical condition, and learn more about the role of the intestinal microbiota in the metabolism of the host. In this perspective, this study proposes to characterize the microbial metabolite profile in stool samples of individuals with severe obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) before and after gastroplasty - Roux -Y (GRYR by mass spectrometry (MS) coupled Liquid Chromatography (LC). Twenty candidates will be selected GRYR patients, accompanied by Department of Digestive Surgery, Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo. Stool samples will be collected in the preoperative, postoperative and 3-month postoperative period of 1 year GRYR. The data will be treated statistically to characterize the microbial metabolite profile of patients with severe obesity and T2DM. This pioneering study is of great clinical importance, since microbial metabolites in fecal water are biomarkers for prevention and development of diseases like obesity and diabetes. Our study aims to increase knowledge about the interaction between the host and it intestinal microbiota in obesity, and open new avenues for the development of therapeutic approaches targeted to the intestinal microbiota.
