Abstract

The grinding process is widely used in the finishing parts, which corresponds to one of the last steps in the manufacturing process. Thus, the reliable monitoring of this process is essential. In surface grinding, the high roughness of the piece and the burning phenomenon is highly unwanted failures and therefore should be avoided. Therefore, a monitoring system able to identify such failures would be of great importance to the process. Thus, the aim of this study is to monitor surface roughness and burning during the surface grinding process through a system that uses the signals captured by a piezoelectric capsule of low cost. An acoustic emission sensor is also used as reference for comparative analysis. Testing should be performed on a surface grinding machine, with workpiece of ABNT 1045 and ABNT VC131 steel together with a superabrasive grinding wheel. Later the machining tests, roughness testing and visual inspection of the surfaces of the workpieces will be performed to characterize the conditions of the surface of the parts. Digital signal processing techniques will be used to evaluate both sensors.The expectation of this research is to provide results that possibly prove effective use of piezoelectric capsule of low cost for monitoring the grinding process.
