Abstract

Hearing children of deaf parents (also known as CODA - Children of Deaf Adults), do not generally have the hearing stimulated by their parents, just as children of hearing parents. Considering that sound informations - particularly those related to oral language ¬- are important to the maturational process of the auditory system, this sensory shortages could impair the development of auditory processing in these children. Considering the lack of data on electrophysiological and behavioral assessments of auditory processing in CODA, and believing that the analysis of auditory function in this population can provide relevant information about the hearing process and their correlations with learning the oral and written language, as well as provide guidelines for preventive audiology conducts, it is proposed this study. Objective: to compare the results of electrophysiological and behavioral tests of auditory processing between CODA and children of hearing parents. Method: 60 hearing children (30 of deaf parents and 30 of hearing parentes) aged 6-10 years will perform the following tests for comparison: brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP), PSI, dichotic digits test, TPF, GIN and also memory tests verbal and non-verbal sounds. Hypothesis: The hypothesis is that although the BAEP show integrity of auditory pathways in CODA, the performance of this group in behavioral tests of auditory processing is impaired compared to the control group, indicating an abnormal functioning of the auditory system.
