Abstract

The number of Electrical Power Systems (EPSs) that have voltagestability issues as their main security threat has been increasing over recentdecades. Estimating the loading margin has become highly importantand many methods have been proposed to measure the distance toSaddle-Node Bifurcation (SNB). However, generators over excitation limitersmay cause structure induced bifurcations (SIB), which can lead thesystem to collapse. The instability mechanisms associated with SIB havenot been fully understood and there is a need for efficient tools that areable to detect and predict such phenomena. The candidate's earlier approved master's research project proposes adeep investigation on the referred bifurcation, including development of asensitivity analysis, loading margin estimation considering SIBs and theimplementation of a tool for preventive control selection that takes theSIB into account. The current research project proposal, associated withthe candidate's master's research project, proposes a research internshipat Bigwood Systems Inc. (Ithaca/NY - USA), under the supervision ofProfessor Hsiao-Dong Chiang, with the main goal of extending the researchobjectives of the candidate's master's research project in the areaof voltage stability assessment.
