Angiosperms have a diversity of floral types. Given the existence of such variation in flower structure, the main goal of the studies on floral evolution is to understand how such diversity has evolved. The advances in modern phylogenetic studies allow testing many questions on floral evolution using the comparative methods. With a well-supported phylogeny homology hypotheses can be verified, ancestral character reconstruction can be made, as well as testing for correlated character evolution, among other evolutionary approaches. Members of the order Sapindales have very diverse flower morphology and represent a group where interesting questions about floral evolution could be tested. Despite a previous study on the evolution of floral structures in the group, this was based on a small sampling of genera of the order and with few neotropical representatives. Families of the order Sapindales have large numbers of neotropical representatives, such as in the Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae and Simaroubaceae. As a result, the study prepared previously covered only a small part of the floral diversity of the group. The increasing volume of data available more recently on the morphology, anatomy and histology of Sapindales flowers, along with the development of new phylogenies with higher sample of neotropical representatives, makes this moment ideal for new evolutionary studies with the floral structure of the group. Furthermore, such study would allow the discussion of the systematic implications of floral features in the current phylogenetic context of Sapindales representatives, in several systematic levels. In this context, this postdoctoral project aims to study the floral structure of representatives of Sapindales, either through a literature review or by new analyzes from fixed material or herbarium samples. With these information we aim to select characters with potential implication in the systematics of Sapindales, which will be used in an evolutionary study. Thus, we expected to reach a better understanding on the floral diversity and evolution in the order, especially for the neotropical groups, which are the main focus of the associated Thematic Project.
