Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is associated with several systemic changes and one of the most important complications of this disease are compromised bone healing. However, there is still no scientific information using immunohistochemical analysis on the influence of this disorder during rapid maxillary expansion (RME) Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the bone remodeling process during RME in induced diabetic rats. Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty male Wistar rats will be randomly divided into eight study groups, each containing 15 animals. Control groups: normal (N), citrate buffer vehicle (V), type 1 diabetes mellitus induced by streptozotocin (D) type 1 diabetes induced by streptozotocin and treated with insulin (TD). Experimental groups: normal + RME (Nd), type 1 diabetes induced by streptozotocin + RME (dd), type 1 diabetes induced by streptozotocin treated with insulin associated RME + (DTD). The animals will be euthanized 3, 7 and 10 days after RME. Immunohistochemical analyzes will be performed to evaluate the expression of proteins related to the process of bone remodeling, such as osteoprotegerin (OPG), RANK and RANKL. Data will be submitted to normality test and if they have normal distribution will be analyzed using analysis of variance two-way (two-way ANOVA) followed by post-test Tukey test. The level of significance is 5%.
