Abstract

Obtaining metallic nanoparticles has become an area of growing interest of the scientific community in recent years. Solutions of colloidal gold particles are very interesting systems because of the easiness in the preparation route and the possibility of functionalization of the surface of the nanoparticles with various biological molecules which ensures some applications that are related, for example, with curing diseases. Although gold has been used for thousands of years to cure certain diseases, only in the last two decades is that the study of their properties has intensified so that the growth in the number of publications increases exponentially every year. One reason for this expansion is the development of the various spectroscopic techniques that allow us to study the nanoscale structure, shape and chemical environment of the nanoparticles. The synchrotron light, in particular, has been widely used for this type of study because of its unique features as high brightness, collimation, possibility to choose the incident energy (wavelength), etc. The gold nanoparticles are the most stable among the metal nanoparticles and they have fascinating features such as the optical properties (quantum effect). The results derived from these characteristics are its applications in various fields such as catalysis and biology. As a consequence, this research topic promises to be a promising field of study due to the multifunctional character of this material. However, in order that nanoparticles have a very definite applicability in nanotechnology it is necessary to establish a route of synthesis with very well controlled parameters; this has a direct influence on the shape, size, dispersion and stability of the nanoparticles. The idea of this study is to monitor the early stages of nucleation, to investigate the role of the medium used for the synthesis, as well as the pH, the influence of the concentration of gold and also the temperature.
