Abstract

The question of hegemony plays a major role to the left in the twentieth century, especially from the work of Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937). In a context in which the diagnosis of time made by the leading interpreters of Marxism could no longer account for the changes that capitalism was going through - and the impacts of this change for the working class - the theoretical reassessment operated by Gramsci was central to reconnect theory and practice and to propose new theoretical avenues for concrete revolutionary action. The concept of hegemony, whose origins date back to the Russian Social Democracy and Lenin, was the epicenter of the Marxism renewal made by Gramsci, figuring on a recurring basis in the theoretical debates of the left during the twentieth century and early twenty-first. This project aims to analyze the Gramscian concept of hegemony and to elucidate the connections established between the main concepts of the work of the philosopher and his historical context.
