Deaf in France and Brazil: institutions, abnormality and sign languages

Abstract

This research proposal aims to establish a dialogue with researchers associated with the Programme Handcaps et Societés da École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales throughout a two-month master's program's internship. The goal of such research is to deepen studies related to deafness - and disability - to better comprehend the constitution of the Deaf as members of linguistic communities. The research undertaken by Andrea Benvenuto, my intended internship supervisor, has been a key piece of bibliography to such problematic. Other references from the École regarding the production of the disability as well as deafness as related to law and rights are also crucial to my work. In addition to that, not only do I intend to perform a bibliographic research, but also participate in study groups concerning the disability, widening the network of contacts of Deaf and disability Studies Group (Grupo de Estudos Surdos e da Deficiência GESD/NAU/USP), to which I belong, as well as my own.I also plan to make research visits to the National Institute for the young deaf during my master's research internship. It is the first educational institution related to deafness and has since become a model to other institutions, including Brazilian ones. (AU)
