Abstract

The fundamental structure of matter is the field of study of Particle Physics. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle collider located at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), on the French-Swiss border. Conceived and built during the 90's and 2000's, the LHC is designed to provide proton-proton, proton-ion and ion-ion collisions with unprecedented centre of mass energy and interaction rate (luminosity) for this type of experiment. For the proton-proton configuration, the LHC could theoretically provide collisions at a centre of mass energy of 14 TeV and at an instantaneous luminosity of 1E34/cm^2/s. Particle detectors were designed and built around the LHC interaction points with the goal of studying the results of these collisions, among which stand out the general purpose experiments built by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.During the so-called Run 1 of the LHC, 2010-2012, these detectors took data equivalent to about 5/fb of proton-proton collisions at an energy of 7 TeV and 20/fb at an energy of 8 TeV, as well as data from lead-lead and proton-lead collisions. Thanks to this dataset, both ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced in 2012 the discovery of the Higgs boson, one of the most important predictions of the theory known as the Standard Model of Particles and Fields. In addition, both collaborations analyzed the data from the collisions in search of evidences for Physics beyond the Standard Model; the absence of such evidence has considerably reduced the parameter space of New Physics models based on frameworks such as supersymmetry, extra dimensions and new gauge interactions. In 2013 and 2014, the LHC went through the first Long Shutdown (LS1). During this period, repairs and improvements have been made in both the accelerator itself as well as in the detectors. During 2015, with the start of Run 2 of the LHC, CMS is expected to take data equivalent to about 10/fb of collisions at a centre of mass energy of 13 TeV. With this increase in energy, the possible observation of evidence for New Physics shortly after the beginning of collisions should not be dismissed. The analysis groups should be ready to study detector data as they become available, and the first results should be ready in the second half of 2015. This document proposes and outlines the search for new resonances through the pp to X to VV, V=W,Z semileptonic process with the LHC Run 2 data taken by the CMS detector. (AU)
