Abstract

The sulfur dioxide, SO2, is one of the main gases that cause acid rain. Several methods able of capturing this gas have been proposed to mitigate the gas emission. Studies involving clay minerals showed that they are able to absorb gases such as CO2 and SO2. The gas absorption capacity of these materials is increased when chemical modifications were carried out by means of ion exchange reactions of interlayer cations. In this project, hybrid materials formed by the intercalation of polymer in the montmorillonite clay (MMT) will be prepared and characterized by experimental techniques. After the preparation and proper characterization of their structural, spectroscopic and thermal properties, the hybrid materials will have their SO2 absorbing capacity evaluated. (AU)
